Shantelle Wright founded Achievement Prep in 2007 as a Building Excellent Schools Fellow and has led the school to be one of the top performing schools in DC since its inception. Ms.Wright says she founded Achievement Prep because “[she wanted] to see something different for children, particularly for children who look like [her] and grew up in the same community [she] grew up in.”

Achievement Prep’s founders made the intentional decision to be a part of the Ward 8 community. Ward 8 has a rich cultural history and Achievement Prep is committed to bringing that vibrancy back to the Ward. While the statistics of our community show that it is underserved, Achievement Prep is committed to using schools to serve as centers of change, positively impacting our community.

Achievement Prep is a staple in the community and is proud to be seen as a neighborhood school. Community members, civic leaders, and area businesses have embraced our school, continue to offer their support and partnership, and celebrate our accomplishments with us. We take great pride in being one of Ward 8’s treasures.

Our parents are worth more than gold – they are PLATINUM! Our parents are our partners. After our parents learn about Achievement Prep and what it offers, they make a conscious decision to entrust us with their children’s education and the opportunities it will afford them.

Our Platinum Teachers are Superheroes who are ready to take on what others see as a challenge, and who instead see victory in doing what seems impossible! Working from a common mission and committed to shared goals, the Achievement Prep team works relentlessly to close the achievement gap for our scholars.

We believe that by forming strategic partnerships across schools and sectors, we leverage our individual strengths and galvanize our collective assets, ultimately benefiting all children, especially those who need it most.

Read Baby Read! Literacy is the most essential academic skill upon which the majority of all future skills and knowledge acquisition is based. At our elementary schools, scholars receive literacy instruction in small groups, whole class, and via independent technology learning.

Roll Your Three’s! Achievement Prep provides a rigorous college prep curriculum with double instructional blocks for reading and math and a dual focus on character development.

We believe that it is important to recognize scholars for their hard work. So we celebrate scholars with weekly recognitions and awards to encourage them to strive for excellence.

Achievement Prep scholars love learning and knowing that each day they are “getting their brains stronger.” We infuse joy and excitement into our learning via chants, songs, and advisory calls. Click the link in our bio to learn more about how this scholar is defying the odds!

The Achievement Prep team is dedicated to more than education. Our teachers embed a sense of value and purpose that our scholars keep with them for life. The challenge we accept isn’t easy, but it can be life changing and life affirming – and that is why we do it.

Achievement! Our mission is to prepare students to excel as high-achieving scholars and leaders in high school, college, and beyond.

Alumni! Even after scholars move on to the most competitive high schools in Washington, DC and beyond, they remain a part of the Achievement Prep community. Our alumni leave with acquired skills, knowledge, and habits that give them the confidence to compete with and lead in elite academic environments anywhere. This is Ayanna Holmes, a recent graduate of North Carolina Central University and the first valedictorian of Achievement Prep. She now serves as the Alumni Support and Special Projects Coordinator.
