As a part of our Wahler Place Redevelopment Project, Achievement Prep partnered with KaBOOM!, a national non-profit dedicated to bringing play to kids across America, and the CarMax Cares Foundation to build a brand new playground for our scholars and our community at our Wahler Place Middle School Campus.
In July, scholars and families met KaBOOM! representatives to design the playground. Scholars drew their dream playgrounds, complete with swing sets, slides, and climbing walls, and Platinum Parents chose the equipment they believed would best match their scholars’ designs.
After weeks of preparation, we broke ground on September 3rd. Volunteers from KaBOOM!, CarMax, and the Achievement Prep community turned out in droves to build our playground in a single day. Darren Woodruff, Chair of the Public Charter School Board, and LaRuby May, Ward 8 Councilmember, kicked off the event, speaking about the importance of investing in our scholars both in the classroom and on the playground. Our volunteers got to work, and in less than seven hours, transformed the empty space into a beautiful, fun, and safe playground our community will enjoy for years to come.
At the conclusion of Build Day, Achievement Prep Founder & CEO Shantelle Wright spoke about the importance Achievement Prep places on investing in the Ward 8 community. Corey Haire, Regional VP and General Manger of CarMax, echoed Wright’s words, celebrating the importance of Achievement Prep in our community. On behalf of CarMax, she presented Ms. Wright with a gift of $10,000 to support us as we work to prepare scholars for high school, college, and beyond. We are so thankful for the partnership of KaBOOM! and CarMax in building our new playground and supporting our neighborhood.
